Outpost has introduced its second-generation gate automation platform, rolling out a ruggedized kiosk system designed to be deployed in as little as one day and reduce gate operating costs by up to 70%.
The Austin-based terminal operator and automation company now processes more than 3 million gate events annually across more than 30 terminals and customer sites. The new release marks a major leap in deployment speed compared to traditional automated gate systems, which often require months of installation. Even Outpost’s first-generation kiosks took around a week to assemble and install.
“This is the first system of its kind that deploys in one day and eliminates costly gate labor while improving facility efficiency and security,” said Greg Akselrod, Outpost chief technology officer. He added that every upgrade in the new system is based on insights gathered from millions of real-world gate transactions.
Built for harsh terminal environments
The hardware has been specifically engineered for demanding industrial conditions, where heavy trucks frequently operate in tight and high-traffic spaces. One recurring issue identified by engineers is physical damage caused by truck mirrors striking gate equipment.
To address this, Outpost has developed what it internally calls a “mirror smasher” a protective guard designed to deflect mirrors that come dangerously close to the kiosk.
“The mirrors come within an inch of your equipment and sometimes hit the equipment,” Akselrod explained. “It’s basically a guard so that if they come a little too close, it knocks the mirror out of the way and protects the equipment.”
Each kiosk integrates cameras, touchscreens, driver’s license and QR code scanners, HID badge and PIN readers, lighting systems, and built-in edge AI computing. According to the company, the system is designed to replace manual gate staffing costs that can exceed $25,000 per gate per month.
Engine-canceling communication system
One of the most notable upgrades is an industry-first engine-canceling microphone system designed for extreme noise environments dominated by diesel engines.
Unlike standard noise-canceling technology, which is typically trained on quieter indoor environments, this system is built to function in live terminal conditions.
“Competing with not just an engine, but a diesel truck engine… it’s a very unique challenge,” said Akselrod. “It’s something that AI can do today; it’s just nobody’s built it.”
A custom digital signal processor works with 50-watt speakers, allowing drivers and operators to communicate clearly without shutting down engines or leaving their cabs.
Expanded fraud detection and inspection controls
Outpost has also significantly upgraded its fraud prevention and inspection capabilities. A full-color driver’s license scanner now checks holograms and microprint elements rather than relying solely on barcodes, which can be easily duplicated.
The system also cross-references USDOT numbers, motor carrier IDs, and vehicle decals against an AI-driven memory system that logs historical equipment activity across sites.
“It’s not just scanning the barcode on the back, which can be easily photocopied,” Akselrod said. “It’s actually doing a full color scan and checking for things like the holograms, the microprint looking for forged documents.”
He compared the gate to a critical control point in logistics operations: “This is the runway. It’s every takeoff, every landing… if you don’t keep track of everything coming through that gate with 100 percent accuracy, you miss things.”
The platform also captures visual records of equipment condition to support chain-of-custody tracking, documenting whether damage occurred before or during transit.
Rapid customer adoption
Since its initial rollout in August 2025, adoption has accelerated. Outpost says it signed contracts for 50 new locations within the first four months of 2026.
“Visibility at the gate is critical to controlling facility costs, maintaining security, and providing food safety protection across the supply chain,” said Mitch Harper, area general manager at United States Cold Storage. “Outpost is uniquely closing that gap without adding headcount or complexity to our operations.”
New features also include remote operations tools such as a pooled operator model, allowing teams to manage multiple yards, along with a detailed event timeline that creates full audit trails for every gate transaction.
