The Government of Saskatchewan has announced more than $77 million in recent, ongoing and planned transportation infrastructure projects for the Prince Albert region and other northern communities during the 2026 construction season.

The investment includes highway reconstruction, bridge replacements, culvert upgrades and road resurfacing projects aimed at improving safety, reliability and connectivity across the province.

One of the largest projects is a $13.5 million upgrade to more than 11 kilometres of Highway 302, east of Prince Albert. The work includes grading, paving, the replacement of 15 culverts and intersection improvements. Construction began in June and is scheduled for completion later this year.

Another major investment allocates approximately $12.9 million to twin six kilometres of Highway 2 north of Prince Albert. Grading work is currently underway, while paving will be completed under a future contract. The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are funding the joint project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

A substantial part of the investment is also to be found in bridge infrastructure.

Approximately $6.9 million has been committed to temporary and permanent bridge solutions on Highway 165 at the Smoothstone River. A temporary bridge is already open to traffic, while construction of the permanent bridge is expected to be completed later this year.

Additional bridge projects include:

$1.7 million to replace the Highway 304 Bridge near Meadow Lake, which was damaged by spring flooding. Construction is expected to begin this summer and finish before year-end.
$5.9 million to replace the Waterhen River Bridge on Highway 903 near Meadow Lake. Work began this spring and is expected to conclude this year.
$7.3 million for the replacement of the Clearwater Bridge on Highway 955, north of La Loche, with construction already underway and completion anticipated this year.
Approximately $300,000 for bridge repairs on Highway 106 north of Smeaton and Highway 6 south of Melfort, with work expected to wrap up this summer.

The province is also investing heavily in highway rehabilitation across northern Saskatchewan.

Projects include a $7.6 million improvement of more than 11 kilometres of Highway 106 near Narrow Hills Provincial Park, which was completed in June, and a $4.5 million upgrade of nearly three kilometres of Highway 102 north of Missinipe, completed earlier this year.

Further north, approximately $9.3 million is being invested to reconstruct and resurface more than 16 kilometres of Highway 135 near Pelican Narrows. Construction began in May and is expected to finish before the end of the year.

The province has also allocated approximately $4 million for culvert and bridge infrastructure improvements on Highway 35 north of Tisdale, the Highway 3 access road to Brancepeth, and Highway 962 near Uranium City. Construction is either underway or scheduled to begin this summer, with completion planned for this year.

Surface preservation projects are also included in the investment program.

More than $3 million has been dedicated to seal coating on Highway 2 near La Ronge and Highway 4 in the Cochin area during the current construction season.

In addition, approximately $345,000 will be invested to seal coat more than six kilometres of Highway 3 near Shellbrook.

Together, the projects represent one of Saskatchewan’s largest regional transportation infrastructure programs this construction season, supporting safer travel, improved freight movement and stronger connections for communities throughout the Prince Albert region and northern parts of the province.
