Mexico to Expand World Trade Bridge to 18 Cargo Lanes as Cross-Border Freight Surges

The Nuevo Laredo-Laredo crossing will more than double its current cargo capacity as Mexico-U.S. trade continues to grow.

Mexico is preparing a major expansion of the World Trade Bridge connecting Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, with Laredo, Texas, as rising cross-border trade puts increasing pressure on one of North America’s most important freight corridors.

Tamaulipas officials plan to begin construction during the second half of 2026, with the project designed to increase truck capacity and reduce delays at the international crossing.

Pedro Cepeda Anaya, Tamaulipas’ secretary of public works, said work on Puente Internacional Nuevo Laredo III, commonly known as the World Trade Bridge, is scheduled to begin before the end of the year, according to the state government.

The project will expand the bridge’s existing structure from eight to 10 lanes and add a parallel eight-lane span. Once completed, the crossing will have 18 lanes dedicated to commercial cargo traffic.

That would more than double the bridge’s current cargo-lane capacity at a time when freight volumes between Mexico and the United States continue to increase.

“This will substantially increase the operational capacity of Mexico’s principal commercial crossing,” the Tamaulipas government said when announcing the project.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the project’s estimated cost or expected completion date.

A critical North American freight corridor

The World Trade Bridge links Nuevo Laredo with Laredo, Texas, serving as a major route for trucks transporting manufactured goods, automotive products, electronics, machinery and other freight between Mexico and the United States.

Tamaulipas officials estimate that approximately 50% of Mexico’s cargo transportation passes through the crossing.

Increasing capacity should help reduce border-crossing times, lower logistics costs and improve the competitiveness of companies that depend on the corridor, Cepeda said.

The expansion comes as trade through Laredo continues to grow rapidly.

The Laredo port of entry remained the busiest international trade gateway in the United States in May, handling $36.33 billion in imports and exports. That represented a 19.36% increase from the same month a year earlier, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by WorldCity.

Mexico accounted for approximately 97% of Laredo’s international trade during the month.

The gateway handled $12.09 billion in exports and $24.24 billion in imports.

U.S.-Mexico trade continues to accelerate

The bridge expansion also reflects the broader strength of commercial ties between the United States and Mexico.

Mexico was the United States’ largest trading partner in May, with two-way trade reaching $87.23 billion. That was a 17.06% increase compared with May 2025.

Exports to Mexico were $33.05 billion and imports from Mexico were $54.18 billion.

During the first five months of 2026, bilateral trade between the two countries totaled $404.57 billion.

With those volumes continuing to grow, additional capacity at one of the region’s busiest crossings could become increasingly important for manufacturers and other businesses operating time-sensitive supply chains.

Automotive and manufacturing sectors stand to benefit

Tamaulipas officials said the additional capacity could support industries that depend heavily on reliable cross-border transportation.

A report on the project identified automotive, electronics, manufacturing and agribusiness among the sectors that could benefit from shorter border waits and greater cargo capacity.

For companies moving goods between Mexico and the United States, reducing congestion at the World Trade Bridge could improve delivery reliability while helping control transportation and inventory costs.

The project therefore represents more than an infrastructure upgrade. By increasing the number of commercial lanes from eight to 18, Mexico aims to address a growing bottleneck on one of the most heavily used freight corridors linking the two economies.

Why It Matters: More than doubling cargo-lane capacity at the World Trade Bridge could ease a major bottleneck along the busiest U.S.-Mexico freight corridor as cross-border trade continues to climb.
