Indiana State Police inspectors identified more than 8,600 commercial trucking violations during an intensive monthlong enforcement campaign, resulting in nearly 1,200 drivers and vehicles being placed out of service.

The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted 4,703 commercial motor vehicle inspections between June 15 and July 15, according to statistics released by the agency.

Inspectors recorded 8,650 violations during that period. They also placed 575 drivers and 597 vehicles out of service, for a combined total of 1,172 drivers and commercial vehicles removed from operation.

The inspections also uncovered 256 overweight violations and 46 oversize violations.

The enforcement activity coincided with several multistate safety initiatives conducted throughout July, expanding the focus beyond routine inspections to driver behavior, vehicle condition and compliance with state and federal regulations.

Indiana joins multiple enforcement campaigns

From July 6 through July 10, Indiana State Police worked alongside enforcement agencies from Michigan, Illinois and Ohio in an initiative targeting violations of laws requiring motorists to move over or slow down when approaching stationary vehicles.

Indiana inspectors then participated in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Operation Safe Driver program from July 12 through July 18.

The North American campaign focuses on unsafe driving behaviors involving commercial motor vehicles and is designed to identify and address practices that can increase crash risks.

From July 19 through July 25, Indiana State Police also participated in the Six State Trooper Project, another coordinated enforcement effort focused on move-over and slow-down violations.

The month’s activities concluded with Operation Highway Shield, held from July 28 through July 30.

The three-day operation brought together Indiana, Iowa, Illinois and Ohio, along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and several Department of Homeland Security agencies.

Federal operation targets unqualified drivers and unsafe vehicles

Operation Highway Shield focused on identifying unqualified commercial drivers, unsafe vehicles and fraudulent commercial driver licensing practices during roadside inspections along major freight corridors in the four states.

Federal officials reported 86 arrests and 766 drivers and vehicles placed out of service during the three-day operation.

Authorities also recorded 36 English-language proficiency violations, detained 51 immigrants and 21 non-domiciled commercial driver’s license holders, and recovered nearly $1 million in stolen cargo.

Federal statistics did not provide a state-by-state breakdown, so it remains unclear how many of those arrests or out-of-service orders occurred specifically in Indiana.

Why It Matters

Indiana sits at the center of several major Midwest freight corridors, making commercial vehicle safety a critical issue for the state’s trucking industry.

The July figures show that enforcement is extending beyond federal crackdowns, with sustained inspections targeting driver qualifications, vehicle safety, weight compliance and unsafe driving behavior.

For carriers, the results also highlight the importance of maintaining compliant equipment, properly qualified drivers and accurate operating credentials as regulators increase scrutiny across major freight routes.
