SINGAPORE The funding of navigational aids in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore remains a key priority as the countries bordering one of the world’s busiest maritime routes continue to strengthen international cooperation.

The issue is being addressed through the Co-operative Mechanism for the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, a framework involving the littoral states of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Now in its 19th year, the mechanism is increasingly viewed as a model for managing major maritime choke points.

Delegates from 125 countries and organizations gathered in Singapore on Tuesday for the 17th Co-operation Forum, part of the Co-operative Mechanism, with discussions focused on strengthening cooperation under the framework.

Since the mechanism was established in 2007, a total of 15 projects relating to the straits have been initiated. The international maritime community has contributed approximately $26 million cumulatively to the Aids to Navigation Fund, supporting the provision and maintenance of navigational aids throughout the waterway.

Further contributions are needed to maintain these essential navigational systems as traffic through the straits continues to reach significant levels.

The Straits of Malacca and Singapore rank among the world’s busiest waterways. Last year, the route recorded a record 102,525 vessel transits, according to figures from the Malaysian Marine Department compiled by the Nippon Maritime Center.

The traffic includes some of the world’s largest commercial vessels. Around 10 per cent of traffic through the strait consists of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) of more than 150,000 gross tonnes and deep-draught ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).

Stretching approximately 500 miles, the straits present significant navigational challenges for vessels travelling through the route. The waterway narrows to a width of only 1.7 miles at its narrowest point, underlining the importance of dependable navigational aids and international cooperation to keep maritime traffic safe.
