NAVI MUMBAI — Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has welcomed its first Boeing 747 freighter, marking a major milestone in the airport’s emerging cargo operations.
A Boeing 747-400F, registered N569CA and operated by Orlando-headquartered National Airlines, arrived from Frankfurt Hahn Airport in the early hours of Monday, August 24. The aircraft received a ceremonial water cannon salute upon landing.
The four-engine widebody freighter, widely known as the “Queen of the Skies,” is the largest aircraft to have landed at NMIA since the airport opened. Its arrival highlights the rapid expansion of the airport’s cargo capabilities as the Adani Group-CIDCO joint venture develops the facility as a freight hub for western India.
The inaugural 747 movement also presented some operational challenges. Reports indicate that delays in offloading cargo are because of technical issues, including ground support equipment (GSE) problems.
The delays subsequently triggered Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) restrictions for the crew. As a result, the aircraft departed NMIA with pallets that had arrived on the flight returned as stacked cargo.
Such operational difficulties are not unusual when a greenfield airport handles a significantly larger aircraft type for the first time. The issues are expected to ease as ground handlers and airport systems gain experience with widebody freighter operations.
The arrival of the 747F on August 24 capped a rapid month-long expansion of NMIA’s freighter capabilities, with the airport progressing through three distinct classes of cargo aircraft within just a few weeks.
The development began on August 1, when IndiGo CarGo’s Airbus A321 P2F, registered VT-IKX, departed for Sharjah on a Bengaluru–Navi Mumbai–Sharjah–Delhi rotation after arriving from Bengaluru earlier that day.
The flight was confirmed as a regular non-scheduled service carrying general cargo and perishables and marked NMIA’s first narrowbody freighter movement.
The airport then moved into widebody freighter operations on August 16, when Hong Kong Air Cargo became NMIA’s first foreign carrier to launch a dedicated Airbus A330-200F service connecting Hong Kong and Navi Mumbai.
The arrival of National Airlines’ Boeing 747-400F now represents another step in NMIA’s rapid development as a cargo gateway, adding the airport’s largest freighter aircraft to a growing range of cargo operations.
