Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is expanding its European presence with the opening of a new office in Hamburg, Germany, as the Indian classification society seeks to strengthen ties between the Indian and German maritime industries.
The move places IRS in one of Europe’s leading shipping centres and brings the organisation closer to shipowners, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and maritime technology companies across the region.
An IACS member and a classification society recognised by the European Commission since 2016, IRS sees Hamburg as a strategic location for supporting its growing European activities.
The expansion comes as India steps up efforts to increase its shipbuilding capacity, potentially creating new opportunities for German and other European companies seeking technology partnerships and joint ventures in the Indian market. IRS intends to serve as a bridge between the two markets, providing approval and certification services designed to facilitate market access.
IRS Executive Chairman Arun Sharma said Hamburg was the natural choice for strengthening the organisation’s European presence. The office will focus on helping European companies access India’s expanding shipbuilding sector while supporting projects linked to green shipping, alternative fuels, decarbonisation and digitalisation.
Hamburg Invest CEO Dr. Rolf Strittmatter welcomed the development, saying the move further underlines Hamburg’s position as a global maritime hub. His organisation supported IRS during the establishment process.
The German entity is currently undergoing registration. IRS plans to take advantage of Hamburg’s concentration of maritime expertise and its strong links with shipping markets across Northern Europe.
The new presence in Hamburg therefore marks another step in IRS’s European expansion, while positioning the classification society closer to companies that could play a role in India’s evolving shipbuilding and maritime technology landscape.
