FedEx Freight has terminated Mike Lyons, its chief specialized services and commercial officer, following an internal investigation, the less-than-truckload carrier announced Wednesday after the market closed.

Lyons had been appointed to the position in June 2025, roughly one year before FedEx Freight completed its spinoff from FedEx Corp.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company determined after its investigation that Lyons had violated FedEx Freight’s Code of Conduct and no longer met the company’s employment standards.

The filing also stressed that Lyons’ conduct was unrelated to the company’s financial reporting or performance. It did not affect FedEx Freight’s internal controls, strategy or customer relationships, the company said.

For now, the responsibilities previously handled by Lyons will be distributed among other executives while FedEx Freight searches for a permanent replacement.

Lyons had spent 19 years with the company, according to his LinkedIn profile. In his most recent role, he oversaw commercial strategy and customer experience in addition to leading FedEx Custom Critical.

FedEx ([NYSE: FDX]) announced the new executive leadership team for FedEx Freight ([NYSE: FDXF]) in June 2025, as the LTL carrier prepared for its separation from its parent company.

The company has indicated that it does not intend to provide additional details about the termination. “FedEx Freight will not be providing further commentary or information beyond what is included in our 8-K filing,” a company representative told FreightWaves by email.

Why it matters

The departure of FedEx Freight’s chief commercial officer comes at a particularly important moment for the carrier. The termination adds uncertainty to the company’s leadership structure as it operates through a major transition and could create challenges around continuity in commercial strategy and customer relationships.
