Federal authorities have seized more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine that investigators found concealed inside a shipment of cabbage in South Texas.

The DEA’s McAllen office announced the seizure on Thursday following an investigation in the Rio Grande Valley. While authorities confirmed that the drugs were hidden within the produce shipment, they have not revealed exactly where the discovery was made.

Officials have also yet to identify any individual connected to the freight.

Multiple agencies involved in the investigation

The seizure resulted from an investigation involving several federal and state law enforcement agencies. The operation was conducted as part of a Homeland Security Task Force investigation, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Border Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The DEA described the operation as a “major seizure.”

DEA Houston provided only limited information about the case in its announcement on Sept. 10. Authorities confirmed that the shipment contained more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine but did not disclose the precise weight of the seizure.

Investigators also have not explained how the drugs were discovered or what led authorities to the concealed narcotics.

At the time of the initial announcement, there were no details of an arrest, criminal charge or identified suspect.

Key questions remain about the freight

The limited information released so far means that the transportation side of the case remains largely unclear. Authorities have confirmed that a large quantity of methamphetamine was concealed within a cabbage shipment, but they have not provided further details about the origin, destination or movement of the load.

Those details could help establish how the shipment was intended to move through South Texas and how the narcotics were incorporated into an otherwise legitimate freight operation.

FreightWaves requested additional information from the DEA. The story will be updated if authorities provide further details.

Why it matters

The seizure is an example of how legitimate cargo can be used as a cover for large quantities of illegal drugs.

The case is a reminder to transportation and logistics professionals that regular commercial cargo can be a front for criminal activity. The broader freight and transportation industry continues to be interested in understanding how criminal organizations exploit legitimate supply chains.
