Community members in northern Manitoba have had their first opportunity to explore the new Thompson Regional Airport terminal, following a recent public open house that gave visitors an early look at the expanded facility.
The new 44,000-square-foot terminal replaces the airport’s aging 14,000-square-foot building and forms part of a $125-million redevelopment program aimed at modernizing Thompson Regional Airport.
According to a release, operations at the new terminal are scheduled to begin on Oct. 4. An official grand opening is planned for later in October, bringing together government representatives, Indigenous leaders, community partners and stakeholders from across the North.
Thompson Regional Airport handles approximately 120,000 passengers each year. More than half of those travellers use YTH to reach medical appointments, underscoring the airport’s important role in providing access to healthcare services for northern communities.
The airport also serves as a major freight gateway for the region. Approximately 45 million pounds of cargo move through YTH annually, supplying northern Manitoba and Nunavut.
In addition to passenger and cargo operations, Thompson Regional Airport supports medevac services and provides transportation links between communities throughout northern Manitoba.
