Amazon has introduced a new transportation option aimed at helping businesses move inventory from the U.S. West Coast to the East Coast more quickly.

Announced on Sept. 11, the new service, called Standard Ocean Express, gives businesses the option to route their goods through the Port of Los Angeles before moving them by direct rail to Amazon’s fulfillment centers on the East Coast.

According to Amazon, the service provides improved transit times compared with standard routing options. The company said the faster movement of inventory can help reduce the risk of products going out of stock during periods of high demand while allowing customers to access products sooner.

Amazon did not disclose pricing for Standard Ocean Express or provide details on how its rates compare with other transportation options.

Faster inventory positioning

Improving product availability and shortening delivery times have remained major priorities for Amazon in recent years. The introduction of Standard Ocean Express gives sellers another way to position inventory closer to East Coast customers more quickly.

The new service operates under the Amazon Global Logistics umbrella, which includes ocean and air freight services from China to the U.S., U.K., European Union and Japan, as well as ocean shipping from Vietnam to the U.S.

Among the benefits of Standard Ocean Express, Amazon highlighted the ability to view ocean freight rates at the time of booking alongside estimated delivery windows. This gives sellers the information needed to balance transportation speed against cost, the company said.

Standard Ocean Express is specifically available for Seller Managed Placement bookings, an Amazon Global Logistics service that sends products directly to regional cross-dock facilities. The approach is designed to improve transit times while supporting inventory distribution throughout Amazon’s network.

Part of Amazon’s broader logistics expansion

The launch comes as Amazon continues expanding its logistics offering beyond businesses that sell directly through its marketplace.

Earlier this year, the e-commerce company introduced Amazon Supply Chain Services, a broader suite of logistics capabilities that incorporates Amazon Global Logistics along with trucking, parcel shipping, bulk storage and other services.

Amazon has also expanded its bulk storage capacity in China for inventory destined for the U.S., further extending its role in the movement and positioning of goods before they enter the American market.

The company’s latest rail offering also comes as other logistics providers expand transportation options from Los Angeles, one of the key gateways for international freight entering the United States.

In 2025, BNSF Railway launched a direct expedited rail service connecting Los Angeles with Houston. BNSF also partnered with CSX to provide intermodal services from Los Angeles to several destinations in the eastern United States.

With Standard Ocean Express, Amazon is adding another direct rail option to its growing logistics portfolio, giving businesses shipping West Coast inventory another route for moving goods toward East Coast fulfillment operations.
