VANCOUVER – The Broadway Subway project is set to reach another key construction milestone this week, with the provincial government announcing that final track installation will be completed as work continues toward the project’s planned 2027 opening.

The $2.9-billion project will extend the Millennium Line 5.7 kilometres west from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street. The extension includes 700 metres of elevated guideway, five kilometres of tunnels and six new underground stations.

Construction is also moving forward on traffic-deck removal and the restoration of streets and surrounding areas at several Broadway stations.

At Broadway-City Hall Station, crews completed the removal of the traffic deck in August. According to a government release, work is now focused on installing utilities, backfilling the area above the station and restoring the street and sidewalks.

Two blocks of West Broadway between Alberta and Cambie streets have been temporarily closed to vehicle traffic since July. Transit and motorists are being directed around the closure via 8th Avenue.

Despite the construction, pedestrians continue to have access to all businesses, services and residences in the affected area. Broadway is expected to reopen fully to vehicles in January 2027.

At Mount Pleasant Station, all driving lanes are now open, along with the new widened sidewalks on East Broadway between Main and Quebec streets, the release states.

Once the subway extension enters service, the trip from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Station will take approximately 11 minutes.

Passenger service on the Broadway Subway is scheduled to begin in fall 2027.

The project is being funded by all three levels of government. The Government of Canada is contributing nearly $897 million, while the Government of British Columbia is providing nearly $2 billion. The City of Vancouver is contributing $100.3 million.

When it opens, the Broadway Subway will be capable of carrying three times as many passengers as the current 99 B-Line.
