New package-sorting equipment is being installed at both facilities, with the Postal Service warning of short-term disruptions while preparing for heavier holiday volumes.

U.S. Postal Service customers served by facilities in Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky, could face shipping delays over the coming weeks as the agency carries out major equipment upgrades, according to notices issued this week.

The temporary disruption is linked to the installation of new package-sorting systems designed to strengthen USPS processing capacity ahead of the expected surge in holiday shipping volumes.

At the Indianapolis regional processing and distribution center, USPS is installing equipment capable of handling large and oversized packages that have traditionally required manual processing. Bringing more of these heavier and higher-value shipments into the Postal Service network has become a priority for Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner.

USPS said the Indianapolis upgrades should be completed within the next two to three weeks. In a Sept. 21 message, the agency also said routing changes were being implemented to improve operational flows and cycle times both into and out of the region.

“Routing changes are also occurring to improve operational flows and cycle times into and out of the region,” USPS said in the notice. The agency added that hiring was progressing to bring in additional team members to support the operational changes.

Louisville, meanwhile, has been dealing with processing delays throughout September. The facility has been absorbing additional volume from an Evansville, Indiana, processing site that is itself undergoing equipment upgrades.

To maintain package flows while the work continues, USPS said in a Sept. 22 notice that some volume from affected facilities would be redirected to the Nashville, Tennessee, processing and distribution center, as well as an annex facility in Springdale, Ohio.

The Postal Service said processing performance should improve as the installations are completed and operations become more stable.

“As these installations are completed and operations stabilize, processing flows and transit times in and out of the region will improve,” the agency said.

The Louisville facility is part of USPS’ central processing region. In 2025, the Postal Service announced that the newly established region was designed to process 177 million mailpieces per day and encompass 100 facilities.

The Indianapolis and Louisville projects are part of a much broader equipment modernization effort across the USPS network. Throughout 2026, the Postal Service has undertaken numerous package-processing equipment upgrades nationwide as it works to modernize existing infrastructure.

During these installations, USPS has temporarily redirected package volumes to alternate facilities to maintain network continuity. This month, for example, the agency has been shifting package flows from facilities in cities including Los Angeles, New Orleans and Tampa, Florida, to nearby processing locations while upgrade work takes place.

According to a Sept. 3 USPS notice, the new and upgraded systems are expected to increase package-sorting throughput, expand automation capabilities for larger packages, improve sortation accuracy and strengthen machine reliability.

The Indianapolis and Louisville disruptions are therefore expected to be temporary, with the upgrades intended to provide additional processing capacity and greater operational efficiency ahead of the peak holiday shipping season.
