The Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) initiative, led by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), continues to transform supply chain management in 2024. With expanded participation and enhanced data-sharing capabilities, FLOW is improving supply chain resilience, visibility, and efficiency for businesses across the United States.

FLOW: A Collaborative Solution for Supply Chains

Launched in 2022, the FLOW program aims to address supply chain bottlenecks and improve logistics through collaborative data-sharing. In 2024, FLOW’s membership grew significantly to include 85 participants, up from just 15 at its inception. The participants now include:

  • Major retailers: Best Buy, True Value
  • Logistics providers: BNSF Railway, CMA CGM, and Home Depot
  • Ports and freight hubs: Key inland and coastal terminals

FLOW’s ability to connect stakeholders across supply chains allows for real-time data sharing, enabling better decision-making and operational planning.

Key Contributions in 2024

  1. Improved Data Visibility
FLOW provides insights into crucial supply chain metrics, such as cargo movement timelines, port congestion data, and inland freight capacity. This transparency allows participants to optimize operations and anticipate potential delays.
  2. Crisis Management
In critical situations, such as the Baltimore bridge collapse in March 2024, FLOW’s data enabled participants like Home Depot and C.H. Robinson to quickly reroute shipments and minimize disruptions.
  3. Enhanced Operational Planning
By identifying port bottlenecks and capacity issues early, FLOW participants have managed to reduce delays, improve inventory management, and optimize freight routing.

Real-World Impact

  • Home Depot: Leveraging FLOW’s data tools, Home Depot improved visibility into potential port and inland capacity constraints, enabling proactive solutions to keep its logistics network running smoothly.
  • True Value: The retailer noted that FLOW’s expanded data sets have strengthened confidence in decision-making, allowing for more efficient planning.

Looking Ahead

The success of FLOW highlights the importance of data collaboration in addressing global supply chain challenges. As the program continues to expand, its goals include:

  • Further Integration: Enhancing inland freight visibility to reduce delays.
  • New Partnerships: Incorporating additional logistics providers, ports, and technology innovators.
  • Sustainability Focus: Leveraging data to reduce emissions through optimized routing and reduced idle times.

Conclusion

The FLOW program is emerging as a cornerstone of U.S. supply chain resilience. By fostering collaboration and data-driven transparency, FLOW is enabling businesses to navigate challenges, improve efficiency, and ensure the steady flow of goods across industries.
