Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has inaugurated a new air-cargo route linking Urumqi Diwopu International Airport with Istanbul, Türkiye. This strategic development marks another significant step in strengthening trade ties and enhancing logistics networks between China and Türkiye.

Route Overview

  • Frequency: Four flights per week
  • Flight Duration: Approximately seven hours
  • Inaugural Flight: January 9, 2025, carrying 55 tonnes of cargo

A Boost for Trade and Cooperation

The new air-cargo route aims to bolster economic and trade collaboration between the two nations, providing efficient and reliable logistics support for businesses. By facilitating the transportation of goods between Asia and Europe, the route opens up new opportunities for foreign trade enterprises looking to expand their reach in these markets.

Expanding Xinjiang’s Logistics Network

This route is part of a broader initiative under the Belt and Road framework, which has positioned Urumqi Diwopu International Airport as a key logistics hub. Currently, the airport operates 16 international cargo routes, connecting Central Asia, West Asia, and Europe.

  • Exports: Daily necessities, mechanical and electrical products, high-tech goods
  • Imports: Clothing, food, large equipment

The network has significantly contributed to enhancing trade flows and diversifying logistics options across regions.

Strategic Importance

As a gateway for trade between China and Türkiye, this new route underscores Xinjiang’s growing role in international logistics. The enhanced connectivity aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, promoting regional cooperation and fostering economic growth.

Looking Ahead

The Urumqi-Istanbul air-cargo route is expected to serve as a catalyst for deeper trade and economic ties between China and Türkiye. By providing businesses with more efficient logistics solutions, the route strengthens Xinjiang’s position as a global logistics hub.
