Space logistics is evolving, and ATMOS, a German startup specializing in cargo return from space, has secured €13.1 million in funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator. This funding will support the development of PHOENIX 2, a capsule designed to enable the safe and efficient return of materials from space.

Bridging the Gap in Space Logistics

While launching payloads into space has become more accessible, returning materials remains a major challenge. ATMOS aims to solve this issue by providing a reusable capsule system, allowing companies to safely retrieve research materials, manufactured components, and biological experiments from space.

Key Developments & Future Plans

✔ Upcoming PHOENIX 1 Test Flight – Scheduled for April 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Bandwagon-3 mission, this test will validate ATMOS’s technology for future commercial use.
✔ Strategic Partnerships – The test flight will carry payloads from the German Aerospace Center, Frontier Space (UK), and other research institutions.
✔ PHOENIX 2 Deployment – Following a successful test, ATMOS plans to scale up operations and offer a fully operational commercial cargo return service.

Impact on Space Manufacturing & Research

This breakthrough will enable new opportunities for microgravity-based manufacturing, allowing industries like pharmaceuticals, biotech, and advanced materials to benefit from space research while ensuring safe return logistics.

As space logistics continues to expand, ATMOS is set to become a key player in commercial space transportation, offering a scalable solution for returning valuable cargo to Earth.
