Adif, Spain’s Administrator of Railway Infrastructures, and Exolum, a leading company in the storage and transportation of liquid products, have signed a collaboration agreement to explore the creation of a rail logistics network. This initiative aims to connect Exolum’s facilities with Adif’s railway infrastructure, facilitating the transport of CO₂, ammonia, methanol, biofuels, and other essential raw materials for the energy transition.

Strategic Objectives:

  • Sustainable Transport Solutions: The proposed network seeks to provide the market with an efficient, immediate, and environmentally friendly solution for transporting future energy products.
  • Infrastructure Assessment: A comprehensive study will evaluate Adif’s railway capacity to handle these goods from Exolum’s terminals, located near production centers, to storage facilities in key ports, with a particular focus on the Atlantic Corridor.
  • Feasibility Analyses: The collaboration will include assessments of track capacity and the potential establishment of new sidings and access points within private transport infrastructures, enhancing connectivity between production plants and ports.

Existing Capabilities:

Exolum currently operates rail sidings at 17 of its terminals in Spain, all connected to Adif’s network, and possesses experience in transporting energy products and other bulk liquids by rail.

Environmental Impact:

The development of this logistics network will enable the transport of captured CO₂ from large industries for sequestration or reuse, contributing to emission reductions. Additionally, it will support the movement of e-fuels like e-ammonia and e-methanol, promoting the decarbonization of the energy and transport sectors. The network will also facilitate the transport of raw materials, including vegetable oils, fats, and biofuels such as bio-methanol and bioethanol.

Advantages of Utilizing Existing Infrastructure:

  • Rapid Implementation: Leveraging existing infrastructures allows for swift deployment without the need for new expropriations or lengthy administrative processes.
  • Minimized Environmental and Social Impact: With established rights of way, the project reduces environmental and social impacts on local communities.
  • Cost Efficiency: The strategy aims to lower operating costs, enhancing the competitiveness of these new products in the market.

Leadership Perspectives:

Pedro Marco de la Peña, President of Adif, emphasized that partnerships with companies like Exolum are vital for promoting intermodality and encouraging sustainable, efficient, and competitive freight transport.

Ignacio Casajús, Exolum’s Global Strategy & Growth Lead, stated that this alliance will allow optimization of the logistics of these new products through a sustainable and efficient transport network, providing an immediate response to market needs and enabling the reuse of existing infrastructures.

José Antonio Sebastián, Government Commissioner for the Atlantic Corridor, highlighted the initiative’s contribution to developing intermodality in Spain, noting that the success of the Atlantic Corridor is directly linked to both infrastructure development and private sector cooperation.

This partnership reinforces both organizations’ commitment to innovation and sustainability, positioning Spain at the forefront of developing logistics solutions for decarbonizing the energy and transport sectors.
