The “dual-fuel” fleet continues to reach milestones: Seatrade reports that the total number of ships (container ships and car carriers) in service + on order has significantly increased over the year, with 400 units already on the water and a still massive order book. This dynamic confirms that the energy transition is no longer just talk: it is a large-scale industrial investment.
On the whole, the container is positioned as the driving segment: a large part of its order book includes dual-fuel capabilities, with a clear preference for LNG in the current wave, followed by methanol, while “conventional” choices are declining in new orders.
Direct consequence for global logistics: we are moving toward a multi-speed market. Shippers and freight forwarders will increasingly compare not only rates and transit times, but also carbon footprint, compliance, and the ability of lines to offer credible decarbonization solutions.
