Belgian authorities have intercepted military-related cargo shipments originating in the UK and destined for Israel, opening an investigation into possible violations of national arms transit regulations.
The consignments were brought to the attention of officials in Brussels following a joint alert issued by Declassified UK, Belgian campaign group Vredesactie, Irish media outlet The Ditch and the Palestinian Youth Movement.
According to the information available, the shipments arrived at Liège Airport on 24 March and were due to continue to Tel Aviv two days later on a Challenge Airlines flight. After customs officials were notified, a specialist inspection reportedly identified fire control systems as well as spare parts for military aircraft.
Belgium applies strict controls to the movement of military goods through its territory. These rules include restrictions on transhipments to Israel through Belgian airports, as well as a ban on overflights carrying weapons.
Wallonia’s minister-president Adrien Dolimont said it now needs to be established whether the legal framework was respected, but indicated that in this case the rules were “clearly” not followed. A spokesperson for the regional government added that no transit licence application had been submitted, and suggested that such a request would in any case not have been approved.
The cargo was reportedly classified under UK export control codes ML10 and ML5, which cover aircraft-related items and fire control equipment.
Campaigners believe the case may not be isolated. Hans Lammerant of Vredesactie said there is evidence pointing to at least 17 similar transfers having passed through Liège, suggesting the airport may have been used repeatedly on the same route.
Challenge Group said in a statement that it operates in strict compliance with applicable international regulations, national laws and industry standards governing air cargo transportation. The company added that it relies on the information and documentation provided by shippers and other relevant parties, and that it cooperates fully with authorities when required.
Liège Airport has been approached for comment.
