In a major step toward improving air cargo efficiency, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, has launched a pilot project with global logistics provider Kuehne+Nagel to accelerate import cargo clearance at Frankfurt Airport. This initiative, developed in collaboration with WFS’ E-commerce & Freight Forwarder Handling (EFFH) team and Kuehne+Nagel Frankfurt, aims to streamline warehouse operations, reduce waiting times, and minimize storage fees.

A New Approach to Air Cargo Optimization

The pilot project introduces a trucking control tower to better coordinate truck movements between the FCS warehouse and Kuehne+Nagel’s Gateway warehouse. This approach ensures that import cargo is pre-scheduled and transferred directly via WFS/FCS trucks, eliminating the need for freight forwarders’ drivers to register at the facility before the outsourcing process begins.

“This pilot project in Frankfurt is designed to show us how the handling and clearance processes developed for WFS’ EFFH product can significantly accelerate air cargo delivery in the import process by reducing clearance times,” explained Michael Jonas, Vice President of Kuehne+Nagel. “By implementing these processes within the cargo operation, any necessary adjustments can be made quickly to enable more efficient resource planning and utilization.”

Early Results Show Promising Efficiency Gains

Initial results from the pilot program have already demonstrated noticeable improvements in air cargo delivery times, with shipments moving faster through the import process. This efficiency is a result of closer communication between WFS and Kuehne+Nagel, allowing for real-time coordination and proactive issue resolution.

“With this enhanced import delivery service, we are working to make the import cargo handling process more efficient to enable us to offer freight forwarders in Frankfurt a more reliable and cost-efficient service moving forward,” said Soheyl Rahmani, VP EFFH EMEAA at WFS. “We are proud to be partnering with Kuehne+Nagel in this launch initiative, which we hope and expect to lead to broader import handling benefits for the wider cargo community at the airport.”

The Future of Import Cargo Handling

Beyond Frankfurt, WFS’ EFFH team is evaluating the optimization of e-commerce and freight forwarding products across all WFS locations in the EMEAA region. The insights gained from this pilot could shape future automation, digitalization, and process enhancements in air cargo handling, benefiting logistics providers and freight forwarders globally.

As global air cargo demand continues to rise, this partnership between WFS and Kuehne+Nagel represents a forward-thinking solution to long-standing efficiency bottlenecks in airport cargo operations. If the pilot proves successful, industry experts anticipate a wider rollout of similar import optimization strategies across key air freight hubs worldwide.
