Cryosafe Services, a specialist in LNG operations, has signed a partnership with wind propulsion developer bound4blue to study how its eSAIL system could be integrated into LNG carrier vessels and optimised for real-world operations.

The work will focus on different installation layouts, with the aim of improving vessel performance while staying fully compatible with the operational constraints of LNG shipping. That includes key factors such as air draft limits, cargo handling procedures, gangway access, and mooring arrangements, all of which must align with LNG terminals and FSRU operations.

bound4blue’s eSAIL technology is based on autonomous suction sails that generate lift by accelerating airflow over an aerodynamic surface. The system delivers up to seven times more lift than a rigid sail of similar size, while keeping a relatively compact footprint on deck.

Approved by classification society DNV, the solution is seen as particularly relevant for LNG carriers, which typically operate on long-haul routes at consistent speeds and often have usable deck space for auxiliary systems. If properly optimised, the technology could help reduce fuel consumption and emissions, supporting compliance with regulations such as the EU ETS, CII, FuelEU Maritime, and IMO greenhouse gas targets, without interfering with cargo operations or terminal compatibility.

“Our mechanically simple solution delivers unique benefits for the LNG segment, and with our proven performance and compact technology, due to its exceptional propulsive efficiency, you have a technology perfectly suited to help LNG carrier owners meet ambitious commercial and environmental goals,” said Daniel Mann, CCO at bound4blue.

The company has already carried out retrofit installations on vessels operated by Odfjell, Eastern Pacific Shipping, and Maersk Tankers. It also benefits from a relationship with LNG containment specialist GTT, which is among its investors.

Grant Wintle, COO at Cryosafe Services, said wind propulsion is increasingly being viewed as a practical option for the sector. “Wind power was identified as having strong potential for this market, and we believe that bound4blue’s technology offers considerable value for these vessels,” he said.
