LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. – Design work is expected to start this month on expanding the cardiac care unit at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta.
The provincial government has pledged $320 million for the redevelopment of the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab, along with expansions to its intensive care unit (ICU) and cardiac care unit (CCU).
Design work is expected to be finished a month earlier and construction is scheduled to start in October 2027. The whole project should be finished by the end of 2031.
The investment will help redevelop the cardiac catheterization lab and develop shelled space that will more than double the capacity of the hospital’s cardiac and intensive care facilities.
The expansion will greatly increase the hospital’s ability to provide cardiac services when completed. There will be an increase in the number of ICU bed spaces from 16 to 26 and the growth of the cardiac care unit from four to 28 bed spaces. Once completed, the expanded facilities will have a capacity of 54 beds.
The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation has also played a key role in the development of cardiac care in southern Alberta, raising more than $30 million to support those services.
