German authorities have launched a counter-terrorism investigation after a drone carrying an explosive device was found near one of the runways at Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe’s major air cargo hubs. The incident, which temporarily shut down operations at the airport, has once again highlighted the growing threat rogue drones pose to critical aviation and logistics infrastructure.

The security operation was initiated following reports of a suspicious object flying in the vicinity of the airport. As a precaution both runways were closed overnight while emergency teams cleared the area. Bomb disposal experts later found a drone carrying an explosive device of unknown origin. “They removed the detonator safely, and then secured the site, and removed any immediate danger.”

Another DHL cargo aircraft is claimed to have collided with an unidentified object while approaching Leipzig/Halle Airport at approximately the same time, resulting in the crew diverting the flight to Hanover. No link has been made by authorities to the discovery of the explosive-laden drone in this incident.

German media also showed images of emergency services around a cargo plane operated by Antonov Airlines. But investigators have not said the Ukrainian An-124 Ruslan or other aircraft were specifically targeted in the incident.

Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, commenting on the case, said the event was a new kind of hybrid threat. Germany has seen an increasing number of illegal drone sightings near airports, military bases, energy and logistics sites, he said, but the display of an explosive-laden drone on airport grounds was a “serious escalation.”

Leipzig/Halle Airport uses European air freight strategically and serves major express operators and international cargo airlines. The incident is expected to further accelerate efforts to enhance airport security, expand counter-drone capabilities and bolster the protection of Europe’s critical air cargo infrastructure as the investigation continues and the perpetrators remain at large.
