MEMPHIS — FedEx is taking its healthcare growth strategy to a new level as it seeks to win over more pharmaceutical and life sciences customers and expand its specialized logistics capabilities.

The effort is being led by Nick Gennari, president of healthcare and life sciences for FedEx, who joined the company in 1992. He is focused on building out the carrier’s healthcare organization, growing cold-chain capacity and building solutions that meet the stringent needs of medical and pharmaceutical shippers.

FedEx formed its dedicated FedEx Life Sciences organization in June, putting together a team that exclusively serves healthcare customers rather than spreading its efforts across multiple industry sectors. The unit employs just shy of 150 people.

A focused approach to healthcare logistics

Gennari said the specialized structure is designed to allow FedEx to respond more quickly to healthcare customers and to create solutions that are tailored to their operational needs.

Healthcare is an expanding business for major parcel carriers such as FedEx and UPS, who are looking to secure higher value shipments and reduce their dependence on lower-margin e-commerce volume.

Healthcare revenue at FedEx exceeded nearly $10 billion in fiscal 2026, demonstrating the significance of the sector to its overall business.

The healthcare segment covers a broad spectrum of products, including medical devices, laboratory samples, biologics and GLP-1 medicines. Many of these shipments require special handling procedures, temperature control and dependable delivery schedules.

Focus on cold chain

One of FedEx’s top priorities is to further expand its cold-chain footprint, which is an essential capability for pharmaceutical products and other temperature-sensitive healthcare shipments.

The company is also working to attract more pharmaceutical manufacturers and other life sciences customers with specialized transportation and logistics services throughout the life cycle of a shipment.

The strategy comes in an environment of growing demand for healthcare logistics. The healthcare demand is more resilient to economic crises than other freight and parcel segments as patients will always need medical treatment regardless of the wider economic environment.

Reliability is important.

Healthcare logistics also carries higher operational expectations than many other industries.

Delays or improper handling can have a significant direct impact on patient care, and products such as biologics, laboratory materials and temperature sensitive medicines can be particularly vulnerable.

“So, healthcare customers pride themselves on reliability, visibility and end-to-end support, with delivery performance often expected to be above 99% on time,” say industry experts.

More and more, healthcare shippers want to work with logistics providers as strategic partners, not just transportation vendors, said Thomas Duke of Green Mountain Technology.

The challenge for FedEx will be to live up to such expectations as the company faces competition from UPS as well as specialized healthcare logistics providers for a bigger slice of the market.

Building up the healthcare network

FedEx’s dedicated Life Sciences team is now in place to position healthcare as a strategic growth area rather than just another customer vertical.

The next stage of the strategy will concentrate on developing specialized infrastructure, strengthening cold-chain provisions and evolving solutions for the increasingly sophisticated demands of pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chains.

Combined with the increasing share of temperature-sensitive products in global logistics, rising pharmaceutical volumes could make FedEx’s ability to leverage its vast transportation network with specialized healthcare services a major growth driver in the company’s quest for market share.
