Hutchison Ports BEST, a leading semi-automated terminal in the Mediterranean, has been honored with the prestigious Lean and Green award, achieving a 4-star rating for its significant efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions within its logistics processes. This accolade underscores the terminal’s dedication to sustainability and positions it among Europe’s leaders in green logistics.
Remarkable Emission Reductions
In 2023, BEST achieved a 58.73% reduction in emissions compared to 2021. This substantial decrease was accomplished through several key initiatives:
- Renewable Energy Utilization: Transitioning to electricity sourced entirely from renewable resources.
- Solar Panel Installation: Implementing solar panels to harness clean energy.
- Operational Optimization: Enhancing terminal operations for greater efficiency.
- LED Lighting Upgrades: Replacing traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED alternatives.
- Adoption of Electric and Hybrid Machinery: Integrating eco-friendly equipment into daily operations.
Lean and Green Program
The Lean and Green program stands as Europe’s largest platform dedicated to reducing supply chain emissions, assisting companies in aligning with the Paris Climate Summit’s objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In Spain, the award is presented by the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors (AECOC).
Onshore Power Supply Implementation
BEST has also implemented onshore power supply (OPS) systems, enabling ships docked at its terminal to utilize shore-side electricity. This initiative effectively eliminates greenhouse gas emissions during their stay and contributes to improved air quality in the surrounding area.
Commitment to Sustainability
Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of BEST, expressed pride in the team’s dedication to sustainability, stating that the award recognizes their efforts to become the most eco-friendly terminal in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. BEST has set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions before 2040. Notably, the terminal has already reduced emissions per 20-foot container by 67% compared to conventional terminals.
