By Maria Kalamatas – March 7, 2025

French shipping and logistics giant CMA CGM has announced an ambitious $20 billion investment in the U.S. maritime and logistics sectors over the next four years. The move, which aligns with the U.S. administration’s goal of strengthening domestic supply chains, is set to significantly enhance port infrastructure, air cargo capacity, and warehousing solutions across the country.

Expanding U.S. Port and Logistics Capabilities

As part of its expansion strategy, CMA CGM plans to upgrade key port terminals in New York, Los Angeles, Dutch Harbor, Houston, and Miami. The company aims to modernize port operations by increasing automation, digitization, and overall cargo handling efficiency.

Additionally, CMA CGM is focusing on warehousing and supply chain infrastructure, including advanced logistics hubs designed to streamline e-commerce and automotive freight operations. The initiative is expected to create 10,000 new jobs in the United States, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the market.

Strengthening Air Cargo and U.S. Fleet Expansion

In line with its logistics expansion, CMA CGM will also establish a major air cargo hub in Chicago and introduce five new Boeing 777 freighters to bolster its U.S. air freight network. The investment will enable the company to offer enhanced services for time-sensitive shipments, benefiting industries such as pharmaceuticals, high-tech, and perishable goods.

Another key aspect of the investment is the expansion of its U.S.-flagged fleet, with plans to triple the number of American-flagged vessels to 30. This move not only strengthens CMA CGM’s maritime presence but also aligns with the U.S. government’s efforts to boost domestic shipbuilding capabilities.

Strategic Impact on Global Trade

Industry analysts view this expansion as a direct challenge to competitors in the logistics space, including Maersk and MSC, as CMA CGM strengthens its foothold in North America. The investment is expected to enhance supply chain resilience, improve trade efficiency, and solidify the company’s position as a leading force in global logistics.

With the maritime and logistics landscape rapidly evolving, The Logistic News will continue to provide key insights into the developments shaping the future of global trade.
