PORT HOPE, ONT. — The Ontario government is investing $9.8 million in a new millwright training centre in Port Hope, aimed at expanding access to skilled trades training and preparing workers for industrial maintenance and related occupations.

Supported through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Capital Stream, the new facility is expected to train 2,550 apprentices, journeypersons and new entrants over the next five years, according to the provincial government.

The 44,986-square-foot training centre, led by UBC Millwright Local 2309, will combine classroom instruction with hands-on training in key millwright disciplines, including welding, rigging, alignment and industrial maintenance.

Participants will also be able to obtain certifications in areas such as working at heights, confined spaces and equipment operation.

Training will take place using industry-standard equipment and technologies, including turbines, conveyor systems, welding equipment and robotic technologies.

The investment further develops Ontario’s skilled trades workforce. In 2025, approximately 43,300 millwrights were employed in the province, with an average wage of $40.47 per hour.

The new centre is expected to provide apprentices and other workers with access to practical training that reflects the equipment and technologies used in industrial environments.

The Port Hope project forms part of Ontario’s broader investment in trades training infrastructure. To date, the province has committed $139.6 million through the SDF Capital Stream to expand and modernize training facilities across Ontario.
