German logistics powerhouse Rhenus Group has solidified its presence in Poland by acquiring a majority stake in Bulk Cargo – Port of Szczecin, increasing its ownership to 98.5%. This strategic move strengthens Rhenus’s position in the Polish logistics market and highlights the growing importance of the Port of Szczecin as a critical hub for European trade.

Bulk Cargo – A Key Player in Port Operations

Bulk Cargo – Port of Szczecin is the largest terminal operator in the Port of Szczecin, handling approximately 4 million tons of goods annually. With 11 berths and a 3.5-kilometer quay wall, the terminal has evolved into a multipurpose facility capable of managing various types of cargo, including bulk, breakbulk, general, and liquid cargo.

The terminal provides a range of services, including:

  • Storage and stevedoring operations
  • Inland transportation via waterways, roads, and rail

Rhenus’s Vision for Port Development

Rhenus plans to leverage recent investments by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority, including the deepening of the fairway and the strengthening of quay walls. The company aims to enhance port infrastructure further by upgrading handling equipment and incorporating modern technologies.

Michael de Reese, Head of Rhenus Port Logistics, emphasized the port’s strategic significance for environmentally friendly supply chains serving Poland, the Czech Republic, and East Germany. He stated, “The Port of Szczecin plays a vital role in European waterways and aligns with our vision of sustainable logistics solutions.”

Strengthening Rhenus’s Position in Poland

This acquisition is part of Rhenus Group’s broader expansion strategy in Poland, where it has been operating for over 30 years and employs approximately 3,500 people. In 2021, Rhenus acquired the freight forwarding company C. Hartwig Gdynia, further cementing its presence in the Polish logistics market.

Strategic Importance of the Port of Szczecin

Located on the Oder River, the Port of Szczecin serves as a gateway for trade within Europe and beyond. Its strategic location, coupled with ongoing infrastructure upgrades, positions it as a key player in the region’s logistics and maritime sectors.

Looking Forward

With its expanded stake in Bulk Cargo – Port of Szczecin, Rhenus is set to enhance operational efficiency, support regional trade growth, and contribute to environmentally sustainable supply chains. This acquisition underscores Rhenus’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the logistics and maritime industries.
