Sumec Marine, together with its subsidiary New Dayang Shipbuilding, has signed a shipbuilding agreement with Seaspan Corporation for the construction of four 65,200 dwt open-hatch multipurpose vessels equipped with gantry cranes.
For Sumec Marine, the deal is about more than just new orders. The company said the partnership reflects strong recognition of its overall capabilities and shipbuilding expertise, while also aligning with broader global industry trends.
The vessel design combines highly manoeuvrable and efficient gantry crane systems with a box-shaped cargo hold configuration, giving the ships a high degree of flexibility and versatility across different cargo types.
Sumec Marine said it will work alongside leading design institutions and crane equipment suppliers to develop the vessels. The company also highlighted that the project helps close a gap of nearly 30 years in domestic Chinese construction of this specific ship type.
In strategic terms, the contract represents an important milestone for Sumec Marine, supporting its ambition to move beyond conventional vessel designs and expand into higher value-added ship segments.
