Shanghai, China — 10 July 2025
In a month marked by global route upheavals and capacity shifts, the Port of Shanghai has emerged as a stabilizing force, posting its highest-ever container throughput for a single month. According to port officials, 4.9 million TEUs were handled in June 2025—driven largely by rerouted traffic from the Suez Canal region.

“This is more than a volume increase. It’s a reflection of how we’ve adapted operationally and technologically,” stated Liu Zhihao, Deputy General Manager at SIPG.

Rerouting Chaos, Asian Stability

As shipping firms steer clear of the Red Sea due to persistent security threats, East Asia’s largest hub is picking up the slack. Analysts estimate that Shanghai absorbed nearly 25% of all diverted Far East–Europe traffic, allowing global supply chains to maintain relative continuity.

Shipping giant Evergreen confirmed it has temporarily made Shanghai its primary stopover en route to Europe, citing faster turnaround times and consistent berthing availability.

Efficiency Meets Sustainability

Shanghai’s momentum is not solely due to geography. In the past six months, the port rolled out a fleet of hydrogen-powered yard tractors, alongside expanded shore-to-ship power stations, which have already served over 600 vessels in 2025.

According to SIPG data, these green measures have reduced operational emissions by approximately 24,000 tonnes of CO₂ this year alone.

Digital Customs and Faster Flow

June also saw the full-scale deployment of a blockchain-based customs platform, developed in collaboration with Alibaba Cloud. This innovation has cut paperwork by 70% and slashed average customs clearance time from 18 hours to 11.5.

Shipping analysts believe this digital edge is helping Shanghai retain carriers looking for speed, especially in high-value cargo sectors.

Looking Ahead

Shanghai officials are preparing for a projected 6.5% rise in westbound traffic during the second half of the year. Plans are underway to prioritize “green-lane” berthing, offering expedited handling for ships using low-sulfur fuels or alternative energy.

Industry observers say this combination of capacity, digital innovation and environmental policy is reinforcing Shanghai’s role not only as the largest but the most adaptive port in the world.
