Responding to Major Supply Chain Disruptions: The Logistics Leaders of 2024

In the wake of several significant disruptions to the flow of goods (and finances) in recent years, companies across all sectors are seeking ways to mitigate variables and better prepare for the future.

A survey conducted by McKinsey last autumn revealed that 95% of the companies surveyed experienced difficulties with their supply chain footprints in the preceding year. Utilizing tools ranging from artificial intelligence to new fintech capabilities, the standout logistics innovators of 2024 are those who have effectively addressed this need.

This year’s top logistics company, Tomorrow.io, initially positioned itself as a hyper-local weather forecasting service, launching its satellite constellations into space to provide near-real-time weather conditions for any location on Earth. “Weather events are becoming more volatile, extreme, and frequent,” Shimon Elkabetz, founder of Tomorrow.io, told Fast Company last year. “And if we don’t start managing this risk and implement systems to control it, it’s going to become unmanageable.”

While the company has indeed contributed its capabilities to climate initiatives—recently joining President Biden’s campaign to extend extreme weather alerts in African countries—corporate clients, including JetBlue and Uber, utilize Tomorrow.io to enhance operational efficiency, from reducing flight delays to ensuring on-time meal deliveries, respectively.

Following the global supply chain entanglements caused by the pandemic, Project44 was among several companies that foresaw the increased demand from shippers and carriers for greater and more accessible visibility into cargo movement from point A to point B. Last year, this led to the introduction of two new products—including a ChatGPT-based route recommendation engine—which for the first time, aggregated various data streams on a single platform. Clients now have visibility into shipments across nearly 100% of railways in North America and Europe.

Significantly, many of this year’s top logistics companies have also prioritized the people who keep the logistics industry running, striving to protect both their financial interests and well-being while on the job. Relay Payments, which offers an app that simplifies payment processes for truckers during cargo loading and unloading, partnered with gas stations nationwide to allow haulers to digitally refuel, reducing the risk of financial loss through card skimming. AutoStore, a provider of order-fulfillment robotics for warehouses, developed the FusionPort, which reduces the physical workload for employees manually picking orders.
