DHL Names New Chief Development Officer to Steer Strategy 2030

BONN — September 2, 2025. In the glass headquarters of DHL Supply Chain, executives gathered around a polished oak table to announce a change that could ripple far beyond boardrooms: the appointment of Andries Retief as the company’s new Chief Development Officer. The move comes at a critical moment, with DHL pushing forward its ambitious Strategy 2030.

Retief, a South African national with more than two decades inside the logistics giant, is no stranger to pressure. He has managed regional divisions across Africa, Asia, and Europe, often parachuting into markets where infrastructure was thin and expectations were high.

“Growth isn’t just about adding warehouses,” Retief told reporters at the unveiling. “It’s about shaping networks that can bend, stretch, and still deliver when the world turns upside down.”

Why this appointment matters

DHL Supply Chain, the contract logistics arm of Deutsche Post DHL Group, is banking on deeper integration with customers. Strategy 2030 emphasizes resilience, sustainability, and digital transformation, and the new CDO role is designed to push those pillars simultaneously.

Analysts note that DHL has been racing rivals like GXO and Kuehne+Nagel to build tech-heavy, customer-first networks. Retief’s global experience could give DHL an edge in scaling solutions across very different markets.

Early signals

The company hinted that under Retief’s guidance, future investments will lean heavily into automated warehousing, greener fleets, and joint ventures in emerging economies. Insiders also say he has a reputation for hands-on leadership, often spending nights on warehouse floors before rolling out a new system.

The bigger context

DHL Supply Chain has grown into a behemoth, managing over 2,400 facilities worldwide. Yet with growth has come vulnerability: supply chain shocks, labor unrest, and regulatory scrutiny. Strategy 2030 is DHL’s blueprint to withstand those storms while maintaining profitability.

Outlook

Retief steps into his new role at a time when customers want not just speed, but visibility and certainty. If he delivers, DHL may not only meet its Strategy 2030 targets but also set the benchmark for the next decade of contract logistics.
