International aviation experts gathered in Quito this week to discuss the future of airport-led development as the operator of the city’s main airport unveiled new plans to expand cargo capacity and improve global connectivity.
The event, ACI Airport Day Quito, was organised by Airports Council International – Latin America and the Caribbean and hosted by Corporación Quiport, the concessionaire of Mariscal Sucre International Airport.
Speakers from Europe, the Middle East and across Latin America, including representatives from the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, shared insights into how airports are increasingly evolving into economic and urban development hubs. A key theme was how airport infrastructure can stimulate investment, create jobs and strengthen logistics networks.
One of the central messages from the event was the importance of closer coordination between airport operators, government authorities, airlines and private-sector partners in order to unlock the full economic potential surrounding major air hubs.
During the event, Quiport announced plans to expand the airport’s cargo terminal by 5,000 sq m, add a new cargo aircraft stand and reconfigure the truck staging area to improve logistics efficiency. The projects are part of the airport’s wider master plan and are expected to be completed by 2030.
Further announcements are expected in the coming months, including new international passenger and cargo routes intended to strengthen Ecuador’s air connectivity.
Ramón Miró, president and chief executive of Quiport, said the event demonstrated how modern airports can serve as true drivers of economic growth by becoming platforms for connectivity, investment and opportunity.
Rafael Echevarne also stressed the importance of industry forums such as Airport Day in promoting knowledge exchange and strengthening the competitiveness of aviation across the region.
Quito mayor Pabel Muñoz, who also attended the event, highlighted the strategic importance of the airport, which handles around 90% of Ecuador’s exports transported by air. Officials hope the new investments and future route developments will further reinforce Quito’s role as the country’s leading air logistics hub.
