A longtime longshoreman lost his life during cargo-handling operations at the Dundalk Marine Terminal in the Port of Baltimore, in what officials say is the first fatal workplace accident at the port in 20 years.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) said emergency personnel were dispatched to the terminal shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday following reports of an injured worker. When officers arrived, they found David Deon Smith, 53, who had been struck by heavy equipment while working on the docks.

Smith, a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 333, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died despite efforts by first responders to save his life.

According to local media reports, the accident occurred when a crane boom collapsed onto Smith during cargo operations. Officials have not confirmed additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident is being investigated by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police alongside the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which will examine the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine whether any safety regulations were breached.

Colleagues described Smith as a respected and familiar figure within Baltimore’s longshore community. In a statement, Jonathan Daniels, Executive Director of the Maryland Port Administration, paid tribute to Smith and expressed condolences to his family, friends and fellow union members. Daniels also described ILA members as “the backbone of the Port of Baltimore.”

Operated by Ports America, the Dundalk Marine Terminal is one of the port’s largest cargo facilities. It includes 13 berths and four container cranes and handles a diverse range of freight, including containers, roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo, steel, wood pulp, breakbulk shipments and project cargo.

At the time of publication, Ports America had not released an official statement regarding the incident, although FreightWaves reported that the company had been contacted for comment.

The fatal accident has sent shockwaves through Baltimore’s maritime community and renewed attention on workplace safety standards in port operations, where fatal incidents remain uncommon but carry significant consequences.
