The Manitoba government has awarded the construction management contract for CancerCare Manitoba’s second treatment facility to PCL Constructors Canada Inc., marking a major milestone in the development of the province’s expanding cancer care infrastructure.
According to the province, the contract launches an extensive pre-construction phase that will focus on design development, procurement planning, risk management and ongoing stakeholder engagement.
Throughout 2026, project teams will continue working closely with clinicians, healthcare staff, patients, families, Indigenous partners, technical advisers and community stakeholders to ensure the new facility is designed to meet both current and future cancer care needs across Manitoba.
Once completed, the new centre is expected to significantly enhance the province’s healthcare capacity by expanding space for cancer treatment and diagnostic testing, while supporting the introduction of new and innovative therapies.
The facility will also feature flexible clinical spaces designed to adapt to evolving medical practices and research requirements, promote more sustainable models of care, improve support services for patients and their families, and strengthen partnerships with universities, researchers and industry.
The project will be delivered under a Manitoba Jobs Agreement which will support local employment and economic activity through the construction process.
The company was chosen by provincial officials because of its experience in building complex healthcare facilities across Canada and internationally.
Previous projects include the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calgary and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia, two major facilities specializing in cancer treatment and research.
As construction manager, PCL will lead the next phase of project planning, design refinement and construction readiness, helping prepare the development for the start of building activities in the coming stages.
