Product tanker operator Hafnia is accelerating the deployment of enterprise AI platform Complexio across its business after the first phase of implementation delivered early operational improvements in commercial and finance workflows.
The update was revealed in Hafnia’s first-quarter results, where chief executive Mikael Skov highlighted faster response times and improved operational efficiency following the platform’s initial rollout.
Skov described Complexio as an enterprise AI solution that combines conversational AI, workflow analytics and automation tools to support faster and more informed decision-making across the company.
“Hafnia has commenced deployment and initial applications have already improved response times across commercial and finance workflows,” Skov said in his shareholder letter.
He added that the platform has “significant potential to scale across Hafnia as adoption accelerates through 2026 and 2027.”
The initiative reflects a broader shift taking place across the maritime sector, where shipowners are increasingly expanding the use of artificial intelligence beyond vessel optimisation and predictive maintenance into areas such as chartering, compliance management, reporting and back-office operations.
Complexio itself was co-founded as a joint venture involving Hafnia, which continues to retain a shareholding in the business.
According to the company, the platform is designed to connect both structured and unstructured operational data across organisations — including emails, chat communications and workflow systems — creating what it describes as a continuously updated operational model capable of supporting automation and deeper business analysis.
Complexio believes one of the biggest challenges slowing wider AI adoption inside large organisations is the lack of operational connectivity between departments, systems and data environments.
Matthew Talbot, co-chief executive of Complexio, said Hafnia’s deployment demonstrates how AI can evolve from isolated pilot programmes into enterprise-wide operational infrastructure.
“Commercial and finance are demanding functions to deploy into, and the fact that Hafnia is planning to scale Complexio across the business through 2026 and 2027 reflects something we believe is fundamental: AI delivers durable operational impact when it understands the full context of how a business runs,” Talbot explained.
The company added that the platform includes built-in governance and security controls designed to allow regulated industries to deploy AI safely while managing sensitive operational and commercial data.
Hafnia, part of the BW Group, is one of the world’s largest product tanker operators with a fleet of around 200 vessels involved in the transportation of oil products and chemicals.
In recent years, the company has significantly increased its focus on digitalisation and operational efficiency as shipowners face growing pressure to streamline administrative processes, improve reporting capabilities and manage increasingly complex emissions and fuel compliance regulations.
The latest AI rollout comes at a time when shipping companies across multiple sectors are investing heavily in digital technologies aimed at reducing administrative burdens, improving workflow visibility and accelerating decision-making in increasingly volatile freight markets.
