Nunavut’s housing push gains momentum with new federal funding agreementsThe governments of Canada and Nunavut have finalized a new funding agreement under the Build Communities Strong Fund, unlocking more than $170 million to support housing, education and healthcare infrastructure across the territory.

Under the agreement, Nunavut will receive $81.3 million over the next 10 years through the Provincial and Territorial stream of the program to invest in infrastructure projects tied to housing and post-secondary education. The territory will also receive $74.1 million over three years to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

As part of the deal, Nunavut has committed to supporting housing development by avoiding increases to taxes or fees that could discourage new residential construction.

The territory is also expected to receive an additional $18.7 million during the 2026–27 fiscal year through the Community stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund.

Working alongside the Nunavut Housing Corporation and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), the government plans to build at least 750 new housing units across Nunavut. The target includes 425 public housing units, 150 affordable housing units, 150 supportive housing units with wraparound services for residents with complex needs, and 25 homes to be constructed by NTI.

Construction has already begun on some of the planned housing in Iqaluit.

The territory has also expanded its use of modular housing. Nearly 100 modular units have already been shipped, with homes occupied in Cambridge Bay and additional units delivered to Iqaluit and seven other communities. Another 120 modular homes are scheduled for delivery during the 2026 sealift season.

More than 30% of the planned housing will be built using modern construction methods, which will help speed up delivery while helping to address Nunavut’s ongoing housing shortage.
