This year we had a busier summer in July at Frankfurt Airport with passenger traffic moving higher and cargo volumes also posting growth, despite a noticeable reduction in aircraft movements.
Some 6.2 million passengers passed thru Frankfurt Airport in the month – 1.4% more than in July 2025. The rise came at the height of the holiday season, when demand for southern European destinations was at its highest.
Italy, Spain, Greece and Croatia were among the top markets. Long-haul traffic also increased, with notable gains on services to Israel, China and Brazil. African destinations, particularly Kenya and South Africa, also performed well.
The rise in passengers is striking when you consider the airlines cut the number of movements of aircraft in Frankfurt. Takeoffs and landings declined 3.2% year-on-year to 41,286 as carriers cut capacity.
The airlines made greater use of the capacity available and of larger aircraft, which helped the number of passengers to increase despite fewer movements.
Total maximum takeoff weights declined 0.8% to around 2.6 million metric tons.
Meanwhile in Frankfurt cargo business went the opposite way to aircraft movements. Cargo throughput, including airfreight and airmail, rose 0.9% to 180,622 metric tons in July.
Fraport sees better results across its network
The positive passenger development was also visible at many of Fraport’s international airports.
Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia had one of the biggest increases with passenger traffic up 14.9% to 208,638.
Fraport’s Brazilian airports in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre welcomed a total of 1.3 million passengers, representing 5.9% growth.
Lima Airport in Peru experienced a small fall of 0.6% with some 2.3 million passengers during the month.
Fraport’s 14 airports in Greece handled a total of 6.9 million passengers, up 5.4% compared to July last year.
Traffic also increased at Bulgaria’s coastal airports in Burgas and Varna which handled 871,379 passengers, up 5.2 percent year-on-year.
One exception was Antalya Airport on Turkey’s Riviera, where passenger traffic dropped 1.2% to 5.6 million.
Fraport’s airports registered traffic of some 23.4 million passengers in July, an increase of 2.2% year-on-year.
Frankfurt’s solid summer performance is supported by higher cargo volumes, growing passenger demand and higher aircraft utilization, although airlines are still adjusting capacity.
