The construction industry is moving deeper into automation, with robotics adoption accelerating across a growing range of jobsite activities.
According to BuiltWorlds’ 2026 Annual Equipment & Robotics Benchmarking Report, only 29% of contractors reported using robotics to some extent on their jobsites in 2025. That share has more than doubled this year, highlighting how quickly automated equipment is moving from pilot projects into everyday construction operations.
Still, even with the rapid adoption, robotics comprises a relatively small slice of total construction spending. Zacua Ventures’ Construction Robotics Report 2026 estimates that onsite construction robotics revenue remains in the low single-digit billions globally, although the market is expanding at mid-teens annual rates.
Market forecasts nevertheless point to significant long-term growth. Grand View Research estimates that the U.S. The construction robotics market is projected to expand from approximately $407 million in 2026 to close to $1.5 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of 19.4%. Worldwide, SMS Insider expects expenditure to rise from an estimated $1.76 billion in 2026 to $6.27 billion in 2035.
From pilot projects to practical applications
Construction robots are increasingly being deployed for specific, repetitive tasks where their impact can be measured.
Applications include jobsite layout, solar piling, rebar tying, reality capture, demolition, bricklaying, concrete work, welding, inspection and material handling. Drones and other aerial robotic systems are also becoming part of the broader construction robotics ecosystem.
Zacua’s research suggests that some projects have achieved labour savings of between 30% and 50%, while cycle times have been reduced by roughly 15% to 25%.
The benefits are not limited to lower costs. Robots can also improve workplace safety, reduce rework and generate structured data that can support BIM, quality control, forecasting and insurance processes.
Human-robot collaboration emerges Construction robotics are not about replacing workers per se. More and more companies are combining automated equipment and human expertise. Workers can transition into positions that focus on supervision, technology and quality control, while robots can assume repetitive, physically demanding or hazardous tasks.
The business model is also changing. Robots-as-a-Service and outcome-based contracts are making robotic technology more accessible to contractors that may not want to make a large upfront investment in equipment.
Humanoid robots attract attention
Humanoid robots are also generating interest within the construction sector, although specialised machines remain more immediately suited to many jobsites.
Houston-based Persona AI is developing a modular humanoid platform designed for heavy industrial environments, including construction. The company is targeting activities such as fabrication, assembly and equipment operation, particularly in sectors facing shortages of skilled labour.
Industry observers nevertheless expect specialised task-focused robots to remain the mainstay of construction automation. Construction sites are unpredictable environments, making machines designed for specific operations more practical than general-purpose humanoids in many situations.
China expands construction robotics
China is another major market for construction robotics. The country’s long-standing experience with industrial automation has increasingly extended beyond factories and into construction sites.
Grand View Research estimates that China already accounts for more than 10% of the global construction robotics market, with its share expected to increase in the coming years.
Chinese manufacturer Legend Robot Technology has developed a range of robotic systems aimed at labour-intensive interior finishing work.
At the Guanhao Mingyuan residential development in Lianyungang, the company says three construction robots working alongside four operators replaced a traditional 15-person crew.
According to Legend Robot, the approach reduced construction time by 21% and cut costs related to labour, project management and time by 30%.
Standardisation will determine the next phase
For contractors, the key question may no longer be which robot to purchase, but which parts of their construction processes can be made sufficiently repeatable for automation.
This is particularly relevant to modular and prefabricated construction. Factory-controlled environments offer robots more consistent conditions than conventional jobsites, allowing machines to operate with greater reliability and utilisation.
Another area which is also expected to grow is collaborative robots or cobots. Designed to work alongside people without the extensive isolation systems required by traditional industrial robots, cobots could take on some of the most repetitive and hazardous construction tasks.
As investment increases and labour shortages continue to affect the industry, robotics is likely to become an increasingly familiar part of construction operations. The sector may not be heading toward fully automated jobsites yet, but the shift toward human-machine collaboration is already well underway.
