Ontario announces $10M in new skills development funding

Ontario is investing $10 million in six new skills development programs aimed at preparing workers for careers in the skilled trades.

The funding comes through the province’s Skills Development Fund, which is designed to help address labour shortages and develop the workforce needed for major construction and infrastructure projects.

The latest round of funding includes a YMCA-led initiative focused on construction employment, automotive service training and a program designed to equip young people with skills for careers in the electrical trades.

Funding comes amid scrutiny

The announcement comes as the Skills Development Fund remains under scrutiny over the way funding has been allocated.

The province’s $2.5-billion program attracted criticism after Ontario’s auditor general concluded last year that the government’s process for selecting successful applications and distributing funding was not sufficiently fair, transparent or accountable.

The province’s integrity commissioner, Cathryn Motherwell, is also investigating allegations from opposition parties that Labour Minister David Piccini breached ethics rules in connection with the distribution of skills training funding.

The government says it has introduced additional safeguards for the sixth round of funding.

New checks for funding applications

Under the updated process, organizations applying for funding must disclose whether they are using registered lobbyists.

The government will also examine individuals connected to funding applications in addition to reviewing the organizations submitting them.

The changes are intended to strengthen transparency and ensure funding decisions are subject to greater scrutiny.

Building Ontario’s skilled workforce

David Piccini said the latest investments will help people develop skills that can lead to rewarding careers while strengthening the workforce required to build Ontario’s homes and infrastructure.

The emphasis on construction and technical trades comes as Ontario continues to face strong demand for skilled workers across infrastructure, housing, manufacturing and other sectors.

By directing funding toward construction, automotive and electrical training, the province is seeking to connect more workers with occupations where demand for practical and technical skills remains high.

The six newly funded programs are expected to provide participants with training and employment pathways while contributing to Ontario’s broader efforts to expand its skilled labour pool.
