The container shipping industry is preparing for a significant first, with Anemoi set to install a rotor sail on a vessel operated by Maersk. The project will see a single unit fitted to an 8,700-TEU container ship, bringing wind-assisted propulsion technology into a sector that has so far largely been unable to adopt the solution.
Anemoi will install a fixed rotor sail measuring five metres in diameter and 35 metres in height. The system will be integrated with the vessel’s existing onboard systems as part of the pilot project.
Rotor sails have gained increasing attention across other segments of commercial shipping, particularly dry bulk carriers and tankers, where they can help reduce fuel consumption by using wind to provide additional propulsion. Container ships, however, have faced a major practical obstacle: limited deck space for the installation of the large cylindrical sails.
An artist’s impression of the planned installation on the Maersk vessel shows how the design will address that constraint. Rather than using several rotor sails positioned along the deck, as is common on tankers and bulk carriers, the container ship will feature a single unit installed at the bow.
The project will also give Maersk an opportunity to assess how wind-assisted propulsion could fit into its wider fleet and contribute to efforts to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions.
