The federal government and Alberta have announced a joint commitment to build at least 1,460 affordable housing units across the province, under a new funding partnership aimed at accelerating housing development.
Ottawa will contribute up to $220 million through Build Canada Homes, the federal agency created to speed up the delivery of housing projects. Alberta, for its part, will provide up to $165 million.
The two governments also expect an additional $238 million in funding from other sources to support the initiative.
According to a news release, the 21 planned housing projects will include supportive and transitional housing, addressing a range of housing needs across Alberta.
The initiative also sets a target of building at least 500 homes using modern construction methods, including off-site construction and factory-built housing approaches, with the objective of accelerating project delivery.
Build Canada Homes and the Alberta government will additionally establish a “joint collaboration table” designed to identify priority projects and coordinate future investments in affordable housing across the province.
