Air Canada has selected FlyUs Aviation Group as its General Sales and Service Agent (GSSA) in Puerto Rico, extending the two companies’ existing partnership to support cargo operations between San Juan and Toronto, with pharmaceutical shipments a key priority.
Under the agreement, FlyUs will support Air Canada’s cargo capacity on three weekly freighter flights linking Luis Muñoz MarĂn International Airport (SJU) in San Juan with Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Air Canada’s hub in Canada. The service also provides connections to the airline’s wider cargo network.
The appointment reflects Puerto Rico’s importance in the pharmaceutical and life sciences supply chain. According to Carlo de Haas, President and Chief Executive Officer of FlyUs, the island is the leading bioscience manufacturing hub in the United States by export volume, creating substantial demand for dependable, temperature-controlled air freight capacity.
“Puerto Rico is the number one bioscience manufacturing hub in the US by export volume, so there is a significant requirement for reliable temperature-controlled air cargo capacity from the island,” de Haas said.
He added that FlyUs brings extensive experience in managing temperature-sensitive shipments, particularly pharmaceuticals, perishables and flowers. This expertise is expected to help the company support Air Canada and its customers in handling cargo that requires specialised care throughout transportation.
Extending an established commercial relationship
The Puerto Rico agreement builds on FlyUs’ longstanding representation of Air Canada in several international markets. The company already acts as the airline’s GSA in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ecuador and multiple countries across Central America.
Matthieu Casey, Managing Director, Commercial Cargo at Air Canada, said FlyUs had established itself as a reliable partner through its performance across these markets. As confidence in the relationship grew, extending the collaboration to Puerto Rico became a natural next step.
“FlyUs has proven to be a trusted partner through the strong results they have achieved as Air Canada’s GSA in multiple markets, as our confidence in the partnership has grown, extending that relationship to Puerto Rico became a logical next step,” Casey said.
He also highlighted the importance of providing dependable cargo capacity from one of the United States’ major export markets, welcoming FlyUs’ support for the airline’s operations on the island.
“Being able to provide reliable uplift from one of the US’s most significant export markets is an important part of our cargo offering, and we are glad to have FlyUs on board to support us in Puerto Rico,” he added.
FlyUs continues to expand its global network
The Puerto Rico appointment also marks another milestone in FlyUs Aviation Group’s international expansion. The company currently represents 24 airlines across 28 locations and plans to open additional offices during the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.
For FlyUs, establishing a presence in Puerto Rico is intended to strengthen its global footprint while improving its ability to serve airline partners in markets where specialised cargo expertise is particularly valuable.
“The opening of our Puerto Rico office is another step in growing the FlyUs global footprint and strengthening our ability to support airline partners wherever they need us,” de Haas said.
He added that the company intends to keep expanding into markets where its specialist cargo knowledge can deliver added value, with Puerto Rico providing another operational base for that strategy.
