FedEx has rolled out a dedicated service for shipping airplane engines and oversized aerospace components, a move that deepens its footprint in aerospace logistics. Built around the particular demands of engine transport, it gives aerospace customers a quicker, tighter-controlled and more dependable way to send critical equipment across borders.
Aircraft maintenance needs keep climbing and supply chains have grown harder to manage, so getting essential parts where they need to be on time has become a real headache for the industry. Airlines, maintenance providers and other aerospace firms depend on speed, coordination and reliable shipping, and engines matter most of all, since a single one can decide whether a plane flies or sits idle.
“When we move an aircraft engine, the details matter as much as the clock,” said Marcus Balzereit, President of FedEx Logistics. “These shipments are mission critical. A delay ripples through flight schedules, aircraft availability, maintenance planning and the commitments the whole aviation industry has made.”
FedEx’s own roots as an airline help here, giving it a firsthand sense of how complicated, and how urgent, it is to keep aircraft in the air. “We’re drawing on our aerospace expertise, digital innovation and the global network we already have to give customers the speed, visibility and reliability they expect,” Balzereit said.
Every aspect of the transport process is taken care of by dedicated teams
The solution is based on a dedicated team which takes care of the quotes and the shipments from origin to destination for main-deck aircraft engines. Specialists work alongside teams across the FedEx global network to provide centralized shipment oversight and consistent operational management.
From regulatory compliance and customs coordination to end-to-end shipment oversight, the list of essential functions is long and ongoing. It is a one-stop solution to enable complex international movements and meet the specific needs of aerospace equipment.”
Safety and security is still a huge part of the operation. We have global operating procedures for every engine shipment through FedEx and we have multiple checks to make sure the engines are properly secured before they leave.
Digital instruments boost visibility and keep track of shipments.
FedEx is also offering specialized handling capabilities and a proprietary digital platform for the service. The technology is intended to simplify the administrative side of engine transport by streamlining the process for requesting quotations, automating customer communications and providing secure management of shipment documentation.
The electronic instruments are to facilitate administration, improve coordination and transparency throughout the transport chain.
The move comes amid a host of supply chain challenges that have plagued the aerospace industry, including longer lead times, shortages of critical components, and increasing pressure on operators to keep aircraft available. In these cases the irregular movements of the engines can cause big headaches for maintenance planning and fleet management.
“FedEx is applying its expertise, digital solutions and global connectivity to enhance shipment tracking, strengthen supply chains and reduce the impact of aircraft maintenance disruptions.
Hundreds of aircraft engines shipped since June 2025
The company is also drawing on operational experience from existing engine transportation operations. Since June 2025, FedEx has been flying hundreds of the main deck aircraft engines. That’s thousands of tons of gear moved.
This history, combined with the company’s global network and aerospace logistics expertise, provides a foundation for building dedicated engine transportation capabilities.
“Through this new offering, FedEx is positioning itself to support the evolving needs of the aviation industry with specialized, scalable and reliable logistics services, particularly for the transportation of components that are critical to keeping aircraft available and in operation.
