February 27, 2025 – Florida International Terminal (FIT), a key container terminal at Port Everglades, Florida, has announced a $25 million expansion and modernization plan, aiming to enhance efficiency, capacity, and sustainability. This major investment, part of a long-term concession extension agreement, underscores FIT’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure and integrating new technology to better serve international trade.

Strategic Investment to Boost Efficiency

The investment will be allocated toward:

  • Modern Container Handling Equipment: Acquisition of new Taylor Machine Works machinery to streamline cargo operations.
  • Enhanced Safety Measures: Implementation of collision prevention systems from Strata Worldwide to ensure safe and efficient terminal operations.
  • Operational Upgrades: Expanding terminal facilities to increase throughput capacity and accommodate growing trade volumes.

Justin P. Weir, CEO of FIT, highlighted the significance of this investment:

“The $25 million expansion plan will enhance our operational capabilities, introduce cutting-edge technology, and reinforce our position as a key player in global logistics. This project is essential in ensuring Port Everglades remains a competitive hub for international trade.”

Strengthening Port Everglades’ Role in Global Trade

Port Everglades plays a vital role in Florida’s economy, supporting over 216,000 jobs and contributing more than $33 billion in business activity annually. FIT’s expansion is expected to:

  • Increase cargo handling capacity to support growing global trade demands.
  • Enhance service reliability for shipping lines and logistics providers.
  • Reduce operational delays with state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

FIT is also prioritizing environmentally friendly initiatives, exploring sustainable technologies and operational practices to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. The investment aligns with global trends in eco-conscious logistics, ensuring the terminal meets both economic and environmental goals.

Outlook: A Future-Ready Logistics Hub

As global trade volumes continue to grow, FIT’s investment will future-proof Port Everglades, solidifying its role as a strategic logistics gateway for North and South America. With enhanced infrastructure and operational efficiencies, FIT is poised to set new industry standards in terminal management.
