Avianca Cargo has transported 60 tonnes of humanitarian aid from Miami to Cali to support communities affected by the recent earthquakes in Colombia.

The shipment, carried on an Airbus A330F freighter, included nine tonnes of assistance coordinated by the Government of Colombia and a further 51 tonnes donated by Global Empowerment Mission (GEM).

The cargo included electric generators as well as essential supply kits containing hygiene products and non-perishable food. Once received in Cali, the aid will be distributed according to the needs of communities affected by the earthquakes.

A coordinated international relief operation

The Miami-Cali operation brought together government authorities, humanitarian organisations and Avianca Cargo’s logistics network to accelerate the delivery of essential supplies.

The use of the A330F allowed a large volume of relief material to be transported efficiently, providing additional support to emergency response and recovery operations.

The latest shipment is part of Avianca’s broader humanitarian response since the emergency began. During the first two days alone, the airline transported more than 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid to affected communities, using both its cargo operations and passenger network.

Diogo Elias, CEO of Avianca Cargo, said the airline’s role during an emergency goes beyond its regular transportation activities.

“At times like this, our operation serves a purpose that goes beyond connecting destinations,” Elias said, adding that the company wants to help ensure assistance reaches the communities that need it most.

He also thanked the Government of Colombia and Global Empowerment Mission for relying on Avianca Cargo’s logistics capabilities to support the relief effort.

GEM expands its response network

Michael Capponi, founder and president of Global Empowerment Mission, said the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance depends on delivering the right supplies quickly and efficiently to families affected by disasters.

The organisation’s cooperation with Avianca Cargo, the City of Doral and local partners has enabled critical supplies to move directly from Miami to Colombia and into GEM’s distribution network.

Capponi thanked Avianca Cargo for contributing its aircraft, logistics expertise and international reach to the operation.

He also stressed that GEM’s support will continue beyond the immediate emergency response, with Colombia expected to receive assistance throughout the longer recovery process.

As Colombia continues to deal with the consequences of the earthquakes, Avianca said it will maintain its support for affected communities and contribute to ongoing recovery operations.
