In September 2026, Brussels Airport handled 70,257 tons of cargo, up 6.8% on September 2025. The growth was helped by a big rise in trucked freight, which surged 37.2%. Air freight also increased by 2.5% year on year.
In cargo segments, performance was varied. Cargo carried on passenger aircraft rose 11.4 per cent while volumes carried on dedicated freighters fell 1.1 per cent. Processed integrator cargo was down 0.2% too
Imports were led by Asia, Latin America and North America in September. Asia and Latin America were the top exporters, followed by Africa in third place.
Cargoes have exceeded 627,000 tons since January
Strong September performance at the airport helped support growth in the first three quarters of 2026. Between January and September Brussels Airport handled over 627,000 tons of cargo, an increase of 8.1% compared with the same period in 2025. Cargo flight movements also advanced, up 3.2% in September from a year earlier.
The results come as the airport continues to develop its cargo network, and expand its logistics infrastructure, supported by new international partnerships, and investments in handling capacity.
Belgium-India cargo connectivity gains speed
Brussels Airport has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hyderabad International Airport in September to enhance air cargo connectivity between Belgium and India. Specifically the agreement points to pharmaceutical and life sciences shipments.
The two airports will seek opportunities to enhance cargo connectivity and facilitate knowledge sharing to bolster cooperation between the two markets.
WFS to take over GEODIS freight operations
Operational capacity is also being increased through service agreements. In June, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) signed a five-year contract with GEODIS at Brussels Airport.
Under the agreement WFS took over the airport’s freight consolidation and deconsolidation business previously carried out by GEODIS. The services include cargo preparation, security screening, handling of the shipment and onward road transportation.
WFS also has a Good Distribution Practice (GDP) approved facility at Brussels Airport that includes temperature-controlled storage for pharmaceutical shipments. This infrastructure provides the necessary support for the special handling requirements of temperature sensitive health care products.
New logistics facility to open in 2027
Brussels Airport’s infrastructure development program also includes a new logistics facility with a surface area of 14,000 square meters, the construction of which started in June. The project is consistent with the expansion of Yusen Logistics and Air Promotions Agencies (APA).
The facility, slated to be completed in 2027, will offer warehouse and office space for the two companies. Yusen Logistics is a specialist in pharmaceutical logistics and APA is a general cargo carrier.
The increase in cargo volumes, improved international connectivity and more logistics capacity are a reflection of the ongoing efforts of Brussels Airport to facilitate the growth of freight and meet the operational requirements of its cargo partners.
