U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a recent conversation with Senegalese President Macky Sall, emphasized the importance of reinstating Senegal’s electoral calendar and preserving the timeline for a smooth presidential transition, according to statements from the U.S.
State Department. During the call, Blinken expressed “serious concerns” about the current political situation in Senegal, particularly in light of decisions to delay the upcoming presidential election. The unexpected shift, moving the vote from February 25 to December, has triggered a crisis in Senegal, sparking heightened tensions over perceived attempts to prolong President Sall’s tenure.
This move is viewed by many as a threat to one of the few remaining democracies in the politically turbulent West African region.
