CSX has significantly reduced operations at its Barr Yard terminal in the Chicago area, transferring much of its switching activity to partner railroads as part of a broader network optimization strategy.
The company said the changes are designed to eliminate redundant handling, improve flow efficiency and deliver more reliable service.
Switching operations previously handled at Barr Yard are now being carried out by the Belt Railway of Chicago and Indiana Harbor Belt, while some traffic is being rerouted entirely to bypass the facility.
The impact has been immediate. Inventory at the yard has dropped sharply from typical levels of 1,400–1,800 railcars to just 228 cars, including a large number of empty units.
The restructuring has also led to operational changes, including the elimination of certain train services and yard jobs.
Labor unions have pushed back, arguing that outsourcing switching work to other railroads may violate existing agreements and could constitute unfair labor practices.
CSX said it will continue to monitor performance closely as the transition unfolds.
