Development Road Project: A Catalyst for Reduced Logistics Costs and Enhanced Trade Relations.

The president of the International Transportation and Logistics Service Providers Association (UTIKAD), Bilgehan Engin, highlighted the potential impact of the Development Road project on reducing logistics costs and boosting trade relations between Türkiye and Iraq. This ambitious project aims to connect the Gulf of Basra to Europe via Türkiye, fostering increased trade volume with neighboring countries.

Engin emphasized the significance of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to Iraq, during which a Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA) on the Development Road project was signed between Türkiye, Iraq, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This agreement marks a crucial step forward in the project’s implementation.

The Development Road project, launched last year, spans 1,200 kilometers and includes railway and highway lines connecting the Grand Faw port in Basra to the Turkish border, passing through key cities. It aims to provide road access from the Turkish border to the Port of Mersin and onward to Europe via Istanbul.

Engin highlighted the project’s potential to enhance commercial relations between Türkiye and Iraq, increase trade volume with neighboring countries, and boost transit transportation revenues. He described the project as a “lifeline” for the logistics sector, especially in the wake of recent geopolitical events and global crises.

By shortening transit times and providing an alternative route for shipments between Asia and Europe, the Development Road project is expected to significantly reduce logistical expenses. It will also position Iraq and Türkiye as transit hubs and contribute to regional development and collaboration.

With the completion of the project, travel time between Asia and Europe is estimated to decrease significantly, further enhancing trade efficiency and connectivity. Engin emphasized the project’s potential to strengthen commercial, social, and cultural ties in the region, paving the way for new collaborations and opportunities.
